Are there certain parts of the country where they are more common, or are they found everywhere? I live in the Chicago area, and I've never known them to be around here, but someone else was saying that they are bothered by them all the time. I had heard of them in downstate Illinois previously, but never up here.

Chiggers are a pest insect found in the temperate climate areas from Florida to the Mid-Atlantic states. On occasion an outbreak of the troublesome creatures can occasionaly be found a bit farther west. Chiggers prefer thick stands of pine trees where pine needles cover the earth up to several inches deep and the penetrating sunlight is not to severe. In certain coastal areas they can also be found in tall, wet grasses such as marsh grass, or wire grass.

Mist your shoes, pantlegs, and belt with kerosene, diesel fuel, or WD-40 as a preventative measure to keep them from climbing aboard "you" for a quick meal.

I can personally testify that there are chiggers in Texas. I believe that most states south of Tennessee have chiggers. Never heard of them in the Chicago area. I believe it has something to do with the severity of winter in the northern climates. Wooded environments and warmer winters seem to affect their distribution.

From what I've read, they can be in any state during warm periods. Less likely to see them up north, but I know I've had them in Wisconsin pretty bad one year. They feed on skin cells by latching onto the skin and injecting enzymes to liquefy it, then suck the liquefied skin for food. After 3 to 5 days of feeding, they drop off and form into a nymph, never to bother humans again. After coming in from tall grass or other brush, wash off with very warm soapy water. Wash cloths in very warm soapy water too. That should get rid of any that you might have come in contact with.

In my back yard! I live in Northern Kentucky now but also had them in Indianapolis Indiana area when I lived there and in Ohio, near Dayton when I was young. They seem to like the wild grassy areas.

They're related to ticks... they can be found in the same places. Brush, grases, etc... Usually in the woods. Yes they have them in IL just more downsouth where there are more open areas than up north... You can still find them in the forest preserves.

You are soooo bummin. I had them about 10 yrs. ago and still have the scars. The best thing I can tell you, is to put nail polish on the red bumps. This is suppose to suffocate them.
