I was helping my brother swamp a bar and stocking coolers. We watched it as it lifted off and then there was the awful explosion and all those lives vanished in an instant.

I was in a computer science class; I walked into the student union, and the first thing I saw was a taped replay of the explosion. I had been (and still am) a fan of the space program for a long time (I was already 2 years old when Sputnik was launched!), and knew there had to come a time when something went wrong; I didn't realize it would be such a shock, of course - nobody expects that to happen - but I suppose I wasn't terribly surprised when Challenger exploded, or when Columbia disintegrated - both were, unfortunately, a matter of time. And as many in the space program have said, it is likewise unfortuantely a matter of time until other accidents occur.

Yes. I was living in Lakeland, Florida. I was outside and watching the space shuttle go up. I remember thinking that it didn't look right. Especially when it went in two different directions. I knew right away that something was wrong, but, had no idea that I was watching a devastating, tragedy. I was 24 years years old.

I think I was in 1st or 2nd grade.. and I had NO IDEA why the teachers and staff we're so shaken and crying..
I was never educated about it when I got home.. so many many years later when I discovered that was what happened when I was so young.. it dawned on me why the emotion at school and who the lady was that was being showed on the news.
