As taskr36 said, you can put it on Stand by mode, However, I had many problem with the standby mode.
I do close it, but it's alright if it stays open. Many different people, many different answer on that subject.
Some says it takes only 15 second to boot from Stand by mode...I boot from total shutdown in 1 minute...what is a minute during a day. However, it depends on your system performance, how much time it'll take to boot.
Now, to activate standby mode:
1- Go to config panel.
2- Then double click on Power option (It's a litle battery with a power cord...my Windows isn't the english version)
3- then go to the third tab, right after 'Advanced' and enable the only check box present.
To have better detail, help and the 'english' version contact taskr36

Unfortunately experts have always been split on the issue. If you are taking frequent breaks I feel it's best to leave the machine on.
If possible, you can put it into standby mode to save power, that's what I do with my laptop if I am going to be away from it for more than an hour.
With my desktop I only turn it off at night, or if I will be away from it for more than 4 hours.

Leave it on. I do. It's fine. In fact, i've heard most HD crashes happen then. (powerup/down). Mine is on most of the time, often 24/7. No problems yet. A couple of times my crappy DSL modem overheated and shut itself off, but I just let it cool down 10 minutes, reset it and it was back in business! Never any problem with the PC itself though.

Its a either or. Me I hate having to turn back on a computer. I leave my laptop on but turn off my gamer when Im not gona use it for awhile. If your gona use the computer 5 or 6hrs from the last time then it wouldnt hurt to turn it off. All depends what floats your boat.
Wont hurt anything but a minute or two to boot up again.

Better to leave it on. The heating/cooling cycles are bad for solder joints and the chips themselves. Mine actually stays on, and it's been on since I got it several years ago.

Just put it to sleep mode. THat conserves energy.
But when you're done for the day, shut it off.
