Does anyone know a good way to clean the residue on a freshwater aquarium's filter? The filter hangs on the back of the aquarium, and it has salt-like residue on it. I have tried to scrub it with a brush, but haven't been able to get the filter clean on the outside. Any help is appreciated-thanks!

I have the same thing on 2 of my HOB's currently but that was because of a dose of Aquarium Salt that I had been using to treat Ich about a month ago.

The white crystalized runs or spots on the outside of your HOB should simply wipe off with warm water (mind you - dechlorinated water please - not directly from your tap if it is not being purified) and a clean piece of either cheese cloth or something that will not leave any fibers behind.

If that does not work - just rub with your fingers the parts that you can inside the aquarium, and as for the filters themselves - don't worry. Salt cannot bef filtered out and even the residue is not going to hurt anything. Just do regular water changes, and you will be good.

once you sparkling the clear out, make sure you're taking the aquarium water and use it to sparkling the sponges and all that. once its wiped clean, take some sparkling water and carry out a touch more desirable cleansing. even as cleansing the actual clear out, take out all the aspects and rinse it truly is going to till there is not any more desirable airborne dirt and dust contained in the clear out. sparkling it back with sparkling water . Then placed it back at the same time. watch for it to dry and use the clear out. I sparkling the clear out like this each month and it truly works a lot more desirable proper that aspect.

Well, you're supposed buy replacement cartridges for those filters...but in a quick fix (like, until you can get out to get a new one) you can just rinse it off. The residue is harmless I'm sure and just looks bad.

You should take apart the filter and soak it in hot water for a while.

my tank does this too!! Best thing to do is take it apart and clean it with an old toothbrush most of the time its just hard water deposits and salt deposits looks ugly but it wont hurt it.
