I was outside with my dog one day.. the kids in the neighborhood adore her and are always coming to the house to play with her and my 2 children. anyway.. I was outside with her and she saw the kids running up the sidewalk toward our house... when they got to the very end of our driveway.. my dog ran out and tagged one of them.( they always play tag with her... they chase her and tag her.. then she chases them and tags them) . but accidentally her tooth scrapped the child. The spca tagged me with a dog at large order and I had to pay a fine. YET!! the same end of driveway/ sidewalk that she was supposedly at large on.. during the winter if someone slips on it because I havent shoveled it is my responsibility? It is considered MY sidewalk during the winter months. So how can it be mine then but yet when my dog is on it.. she is considered at large? Sounds like double standards to me.

it is double standards..
most cities have a leash law b/c of bad dog owners - NOT you !!
yeah, We raise German Sheps & we have kids.. I'm so tired of whiney parents calling a nip a bite & so on....
They same stupid parents FORGET dogs communicate with their mouths so keep you little Jr from bashing the dog over the head with his toy, Watch your friggin kid !!
Anyway, keep your dog away from the kids for it's own safety. Poochie may be taken from you if it happens again. just don't do it & it you take dog outside, always on a lead & never left alone with kids. Your dog is marked now by the idiots tha twon't take dangerous dogs like Pit from crappy owners but will make an example of someone like you.
Take care !!

I agree. Sounds like a double standard. It could be because of a leash law in your community. Most leash laws say you have to have your dog restrained on less than a 6 foot lead and in your control on sidewalks.

I'm a great animal lover and have dogs and children. The other day my 7 yr daughter was making our husky do "mad hops" for treats. This is kind of like begging, and the dog hops around on it's back paws like a dog in the circus. I told her, "Don't do that, he is going to grab the treat while he's hopping and you'll get bitten." So what happened? Exactly that. The skin was not broken, but if it had been and I had taken her to the clinic, my dog would have been written up as a biter. In this case, I reprimanded my daughter for doing what she knew she shouldn't.

If my dog ever bit her without provocation, that would be the dog's last day on this earth. But let's be real...dogs and kids play, and sometimes the kid gets scraped by teeth. It's like riding a bicycle, sometimes the knees get scraped.

The idea is for government to do whatever they can to take money from working citizens like you. That's the whole thing. And yes, it is a double standard, due to the fact that no one can sue you if the sidewalk belongs to the government, and no one can fine you if your dog is listed as yours and is on your sidewalk, and thus being watched.
