No. When Major League Baseball retired the number, they stated that anybody wearing it at that time could wear it for the duration of their career.

Wow there are a lot of ignorant people here. MLB retired the #42 so after that nobody would be allowed to wear #42 again unless they were wearing at the time. Mariano is the ONLY active player to still wear the number and once he retires it will never be used by another player.

So the Dodgers did not retire the number MLB did. Therefore regardless of what team a player plays for he cannot wear #42.

"In 1997 (the 50th anniversary of his major league debut), his number 42 was retired from all major league teams, though players who wore the number at the time, such as Mo Vaughn (who wore it in Robinson's honor) and Mariano Rivera (who remains the only major leaguer to wear 42), were allowed to retain it to the end of their careers. The New York Yankees are the only major league team not to list 42 among their retired numbers. In 2004, Major League Baseball designated that April 15 each year would be marked as "Jackie Robinson Day" in all their ballparks." -- Wikipedia

That's just outright ridiculous. He was wearing the number before the retirement came down and he's by all means allowed.

Two notes: One, this is an idiot thing, not a Red Sox fan, so others can kindly keep the rivalry out of this. I love the Sox, but can easily respect Rivera as one of the best closers out there.

Also: Why be afraid of the guy? It's been proven repeatedly over the last few years that he's simply not very effective against the Red Sox anymore.

whilst MLB desperate to retire 40 two in 1997, appearing commissioner Bud Selig introduced that to honor Jackie Robinson no participant any further would be issued the previous due hall of Famer's huge sort. besides the fact that, the gamers who at present placed on the huge sort can save it for the remainder of their careers. The 12 significant-league gamers donning No. 40 two as of Tuesday night: Mo Vaughn, Boston Butch Huskey, long island Mets Tom Goodwin, Kansas city Mariano Rivera, long island Yankees Mike Jackson, Cleveland Lenny Webster, Baltimore Jason Schmidt, Pittsburgh Jose Lima, Houston Scott Karl, Milwaukee Dennis cook dinner, Florida Kirk Rueter, San Francisco x-Marc Sagmoen, Texas x-Sagmoen, who made his significant-league debut Tuesday night, became into randomly assigned 40 two by making use of the Rangers whilst he joined the gang. Mr Robinson was a Dodger, a Broklyen Dodger not a yankee.
When the team move to LA, the number went to so Rivera did not break any rule. The team sometimes chosse the number for the player and sometimes the player chosse the number. So my guess is that Rivera had wanted 42 to honnor Mr Robinson.

Sure, he had the number before it was retired. I feel Robinsons number being retired is a disgrace to the Babe who did more for the game than anyone and the black ballplayers who played in the majors from the late 1870's to the very early 20th century. Yes MLB had black ball players before Jackie. Mariano has done more than Jackie he is the greatest closer of all time.

Number 42 would have been retired for the team Jackie Robinson played for, not for all the teams of Pro Baseball.

I think that that's stupid. Did Jackie Robinson want that? Sooner or later they are going to run out of numbers.
