I don't know the terminology here so I'll try... I drive a manual 5 speed. Connected to my shifter handle is a rod, that rod is connected to a mechanism that holds it tight (the cable runs inside it) so I can shift. That rod has disconnected from the mechanism, so now when I try to shift into 2nd, 4th or Rev instead of pushing into this mechanism the rod misses its mark and I can't shift. I'm pretty sure the rod is supposed to be attached and I'm only supposed to me boving a piece that slides inside it. What kind of repair am I going to need and how serious is it?

I didn't play with the shifter -- I felt it go loose, like the part directly under the handle had come disconnected. That has happened before and it just pops back on (the first joint from the handle). This is the second joint fron the handle.

If it's a front wheel drive car. Then chances are it has a nylon pivot on the bottom of the shifter under the car. These do tend to go out once in a while. You are better off taking it in to a shop, I have done this job myself in the past and it can be a problem sometimes.

Take it to a mechanic. What possessed you to tinker with the shifter?

Sounds like a broken linkage or support. You need a mechanic, sorry.

This rod should be attached with some kind of clip. If you don't have any idea as to what kind of clip it takes, call your local transmission shopand tell them what kind of vehicle it is and they should be able to tell you what kind of clip to use.
