4 with the little 4 super script is like 4^4, which is 4 to the 4th power which is 4*4*4*4. 9^2 is 9squared which is 9*9 which is 81. if it's 9^2 * 2, then that's 81*2, right?

Basically, you multiply the big number by itself the number of times the small number says. So X^2 is X * X, X^3 is X * X * X, X^4 is X * X * X * X, X^5 is X * X * X * X * X

Any number to the 2nd power (when any number has a small two next to it) is that number squared. For instance if the number is 9 squared it would equal 9 x 9. If the small number is a 4 it would equal 9 x 9 x 9 x 9. It it were 8 to the 5th power it would be 8 X 8 X 8 X 8 X 8.

that is called exponents, or raising to a power. To use your example, 4 with a little 4 over it would be read "four to the fourth power" and would mean 4 x 4 x 4 x 4. Raising a number to the second power is called "squaring" the number. So 9 with a small 2 is "nine squared", and equals 9 x 9.

it is only 'squared' if the little number is a 2. means the big number is multiplied by itself 2 times. like 4 squared is 4 times 4. 4 with a little 4 above is 4 times 4 times 4 times 4.

It is only "squared" if the little number above it is 2. Suqaring means you take the number and multiply it by itself. So 3 with a little 2 superscript means 3 times 3. If you see a 4 with a little 5 above it, it means 4 times 4 times 4 times 4 times 4 (multiply it by itself 5 times).

It means you multiple the larger number by itself the number of times indicated by the small number. Big 2 with little 3 would be 2 times 2 times 2 and equal 8.

it means that you would multiply the big number by itself the number of times the small number says...

Soooooooo 4^4 ( the correct way to write 4 with a little 4) would be solved like this: 4x4x4x4 = 256 (4x4 = 16, 16x4 = 64, 64x4 = 256)

9^2 would be 9x9 (81)

It is squared when the little number is a 2, cubed when it is a 3. Those are the powers. 8 squared is 8 X 8 or 64. It means the big number to the power of the little number. or 8 cubed is 8x8x8. DO NOT multiple the big one by the litttle one. Hope that helps some.

that means the number has been "raised to a power"....it means you multiply that number by itself the number of times on the raised power (called an exponent)....(designated here by a ^)

if you have 2 and the number above it to the right is 3 (2^3) you would multiply 2x2x2=8 to get your answer; 3^2 =3x3=9, etc.

similarly, if its raised to a 1, its just that number, so 2^1 would be 2...and
if its raised to a 0 power, your answer will ALWAYS be =1

Its the thing you call EXPONENT. It indicates how many times you multiply a number by itself. As an example. 4 with a small 2 above. the answer is 16 because 4x4=16.
