An adjective is what is known as a part of speech. There are several parts of speech, most common are nouns which are basically persons places or things, and verbs which describe an action. Adjectives are a part of speech that modify any noun in order to enhance or make its meaning more clear. Take the sentence "I like ice cream," for example. If you insert the adjective "chocolate" before the compound noun "ice cream" you have specified which flavor you like. An adjective can take the form of flavors, colors, sizes, quantities, or anything that adds to or changes the meaning of a noun.

What the adjective does is it gives a word some flavouring so instead of the boring 'the ball was thrown out of his hand' it can make the sentence more flavoured 'The SOFT ball was thrown out of his TOUGH hand'. And it describes what something was like or is like.
