Use extra hold hairspray to keep the cattail's natural look. I have also used gold and silver spray paint to use them for Christmas decorations. You don't want to use the paint after the hairspray, though. If you want to use some for decoration, select them now and spray paint them. A selection of different sizes is great!

Ive heard of sticking the stem ends in liquid floor wax to take up the wax and preserve the cattail or you can dip them into the wax solution to keep them from exploding

There is one available at craft stores - I've also heard of people using hair spray, but that may have too much alcohol in it.

If ANY animal actually could be tamed and be happy as a domestic animal, I would say a penguin. I would build an icy wonderland in my backyard to keep it happy. I just love penguins - they're the best.

Good old fashioned hair-spray should do the trick for you.
Make sure you get all of the bugs off of it first though!
