well, shoelaces. i'm a college english teacher and i find that my students write the best papers when they're writing about something they really care about, something they're really interested in. that's probably why your teacher is letting your choose your own topic. so think about yourself -- your hobbies, your interests, your plans for the future -- and see if you find a topic there. you'll want something that you can develop and support an opinion on -- in other words, "Abraham Lincoln was President of the United States during the Civil War" is just a statement of fact, and therefore won't make a very interesting paper. but "Abraham Lincoln was the greatest president who ever served because of his commitment to maintaining the Union" is a great paper -- historical facts are involved, but they will be used to support your idea. good luck!

First of all look at your teacher. Is your teacher an older adult? Is your teacher a younger adult? If you're looking for a good grade and some well deserved brownie points, pick a topic that they might enjoy reading about. And what subject is this for? I'd be glad to offer some ideas.

Some topic you are interested in is the best. Make a list of your interests or what you would like to learn more about and there you have it, choose one and get to work on it.
