oh yeah.. it works in most programs by default... and with a little code it works for ALL types of programs!

Yes, there is a built-in dictionary. It's located in the Applications folder. As far as integrating it into Java, i'm not sure. There is also a widget that is included with 10.4 that references the built-in dictionary/thesaurus.
