You need at least 2 (more likely 4-5) people who play instruments, (and/or sing) have similar musical tastes, and most importantly, have the same level of committment. (ie. do you want to make it big and move to LA, or are you just having fun? Ideally the answer is somewhere in the middle)

You need a place to practice. You will also need some basic equipment. Besides the obvious - instruments - you need some basic PA - like speakers, an amplifier, a mixer, microphones, mic stands, cables.

You need a leader. Someone to organize practice, pick out songs, settle musical disputes, etc. Usually this person is the best musician or the person with the most equipment. You can do things as a group, but that is usually more confusing and may send you in different directions. It's best to have a leader.

Being in a band is a blast, with a little practice and a lot of attitude, you can go a long way. Be careful - once it gets in your blood, the need to perform music stays with you forever!

Have fun!

Generally 3 musicians, such as Piano [Keyboard]
Guitar and Drums. They should be able to play
music, either by reading sheet music or playing
by ear. There are lots of variations of what kind
of instruments are played. Accordian, Organ,
Horns, etc. Two players alone are not generally
called a band.

I would not consider rap or hip-hop makers to be BANDS.
All you need for those is a crappy monotonous backbeat and some lousy poetry.
