When they reach seventy in the UK, all drivers must by law, have regular checks with a GP and satisfy the DVLA of their competence to drive, to validate their licence.
I'm 61 and have 33 years clean driving behind me and have been hit by a Tarmac lorry when on foot as a child of eight, on a zebra crossing, and put in coma, and hospitalised for a year.
He was not observant that the traffic had stopped to let a group of children cross. He over-took the bus that let us cross and hooked me under the rear axel and dragged me half a mile uphill. thanks to a female pedestrian, they realised the 'rags' under the lorry was a child (me) and stopped it! He was a fit young family man who was banned for seven years and lost his job.
And a US soldier stationed near my town, shot across the main road when I was travelling at 60+ mph and I hit him head on and was hospitalised again. He was quite young and admitted guilt.
Neither accident was my fault!
Bad drivers come in all ages... usually young, male, and reckless, but these days, young females are as bad! You're all in too much of a hurry and don't obey the road rules and take too many impatient chances.
I passed my test after the car crash, I was then 28 years old and I'd been on my last driving lesson before my test, it had to be reset!
Since then, I've never had a point on my licence and have watched our roads becoming ever more dangerous, with reckless young drivers, many from Europe who undercut on the inside and disobey the road rules!
Drivers should cease to drive when their reflexes are too slow, and this fits every age as well!
Given all of this, I would decide not to drive after 75. I've sorta made this decision years ago. And if my health is poor, if I feel nervous due to other traffic as I age, I'll stop sooner.
Thus far though, I'm likely a much safer bet than you:-)
And I've never made a claim... have you?
PS... I'm retired as well:-)

I do about 100,000 kms a year and the worse drivers are the early twenties males.A re-test at 65 and every 3 years after that would be best.Theres a lot of good oap drivers unfortunately theres a lot of dithery ones too that wont admit its time to hang up the keys.
As for j j's answer, why are people overtaking on the inside, maybe its because your sitting in the middle lane and wont pull over, read the highway code girl

I think that the solution to the problem is simple. Begining at age 65 drivers should have to take an on-the-road exam once a year untill the state deems them unable to safely operate a vehicle. There OAP's out there that are excellent drivers, they should be allowed continued use of their driving privilages. But unsafe drivers of any age should not be allowed to be behind the wheel of a vehicle.

First off let me say Go F* Yourself if you are insulting somebody for their age bracket. As far as what age people should stop driving my dad and I have discussed this and we both agree at the age 60 there should be a mandatory driving test given every 2-3 years. He is 67 as of July and a professional truck driver, but he still can handle being behind the wheel BETTER than most of us younger people. Now, at what age should people really be allowed to drive? How many younger people SHOULDN'T be behind the wheel, because they have no sense of responsibility and don't obey traffic laws. Remember you'll be old someday too and KARMA is gonna come back to kick your @$$

Some people should never start! Most of the accidents on our roads are caused by young drivers not old ones, and at least the old ones only drive at 20mph not 90!

I do not think that you can generalise - do actually have statistics?
I think if you research it you will find that more young people cause more serious accidents.
To answer you question, people should stop driving when they become a danger on the roads regardless of age.

The person who answered 65 is way out of line. Many people are still working at 65.
I agree with most of the people on here. You should stop driving when your vision, reaction time, etc. make it dangerous for you to drive.

I don't think there should be a set age at which people should have to stop driving. I do think there should be a set age when they have to start having regular vision tests and an actual driving test to ensure they are still capable of driving safely to protect themselves and others...maybe 70-years-old. ??
