I've been waiting for years now and cable/DSL still aren't anywhere in site. I've thought about DirecWay, but I'm not about to pay almost $70.00 a month for an ISP that's only half as fast as cable or DSL (and that's on a good day). Will my patience with this dial-up ISP ever be rewarded?

I live in Orange, VA and cable TV isn't available since were out in the woods (Friday the 13th style). We just have Dish Network.

check if there is a Wireless ISP (WISP) in your area. They can be as fast as Cable/DSL and cost similar to them but have lower latency than satellite

We have no idea where you area is.
DSL is reaching a lot more places than ever. With new better technology the old distance limit is extended. It still is inferior to cable but also a lot of the cable companies are upgrading to wiring that will support cable modems.

I don't know. I'm in the same position as you are, where I can't find any high speed internet connection in my area. For some reason, other people who live in the same city have it. I suppose you should move to a house on your Main Street if you really want it. If not, well, patience is a virtue.

If there is cable/tv in your area then you should have cable internet. DSL is only available for those who are a few miles from a telephone switching station...
There is also ISDN, you'd need to dedicate several pairs to the internet connection, but it should be do-able.

Go to their website and make a comment. This may not work but it always helps. If you live in an area that is not very populated it may not happen very soon. It took forever to happen in my town. but after a few years we got it. Good luck to you.
