Yes, we do, actually. :-) Those of us with spirit totems strongly identify with our aninals that chose us, and think of ourselves as one of them.

The scientific answer of course is that they do not. Thye are however very intelligent and curios creatures, who can experince limited emotions simailr to what dogs and acts feel (having a finely tuned nervous system and being taxonomically in-between). Recent studies are giving good evidence that more "higher" mammals do experience basic emotions, such as joy, grief, altruistic intent, and rage, in realtion to stimuli other than basic physical sensations such as pain, hunger, pack instinct, mating urges, etc. Several good books with data to back the theories have been written.

So real foxes don't actually cry, but thay probably do experience a form of grief that is unrecognizable to our language but still real. I raised a fox kit in my home once, and he definitely liked some people more than others, and would vocalize all sorts of things in an effort to learn to communicate. Some of his "cries" were eerily human sounding. I am quite sure he felt sadness when it was time to give him up, as my boyfreind and I had become his family through my efforts to socialize him to respond to others when he got released. It worked too well- I became the first person on earth to truly domesticate a fox, through trying to learn its bahavior and respond to it on its own terms!

"Most mammals will produce tears in response to extreme pain or other stimuli, but crying as an emotional reaction is considered by many to be a uniquely human phenomenon, possibly due to humans' advanced self-awareness. Some studies suggest that elephants and gorillas may cry as well."

The only animal I've ever heard of actually producing tears when they're sad are elephants.

Other animals like dogs, cats, and horses don't produce tears due to their emotions. When they're sad or in pain most will whine or yelp.
