You may also take into consideration that the planet is cooling anyway with or without our help, just a matter of time before all its' core heat is lost and the shell of it freezes. If everyone worked on a farm then there would be no one to distribute the different products to different areas of the world and everyone would die of malnutrition due to lack of variety and in some areas people would not have shelter due to lack of building materials. And has it ever occured to you that maybe some of those people that sit in an office all day are doing everything they can to prevent abuse of our natural resources or are researching new ways to conserve what we have so that we don't have to all be farmers? It's great that you are concerned about the planet, but denying that civilization is a good thing is rediculous. If we had no factories and no offices then you may well have died in childbirth or shortly thereafter due to lack of medicine and the proper knowledge of nutrition and child care. Would it be better if we just let our children die and the elderly die so that there are less people to ruin our planet?

You have a rather simplistic view of the world. Actually there are folks doing something about many of the issues you mention daily, as well as some you did not mention. (like them wanting to kill off the newly relocated wolves in Oregon while they are an endangered species.)

Perhaps you could volunteer for some of your favorite rights groups and then you would meet others who share your outrage. (Volunteers do lobbying, mailing lists to motivate others to action, do fund raising, and a variety of things.)

There are always petitions to save the whales/coyotes/rain forest etc etc etc. All are good causes and most folks who support these causes are aware of and work against the factions that are melting the ice caps.

Going back to everyone working in the fields is probably not viable, but that does not mean you could not grow your own food. You can change the world one person at a time, but you always have to start with yourself.

You just hit on an interesting topic. You are correct that the polution level that's causing global warming is turning into a real threat.

You think cars are bad when they burn fuel. Look at all the airplane traffic that burns more feul than cars, hardly anyone notices but the majority of fuel burning is happening way above our own heads.

The Federal Aviation Administration has published an interesting map that shows the amount of fuel burned by aircraft traffic worldwide for the years 2000-2004. The US and Europe show the highest amounts of fuel consumption, and thus air traffic.

The accompanying stats show that there were 24,085,131 passenger jet flights during 2004 that travelled a total of 18.7 billion nautical miles, and that these flights injected an estimated 584 billion Kg (about 644 million tons) of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere...can't be a good thing.

I agree with you and ther are many other issues to add to the list. I pretty much hate the world and I'm just one of millions. But all these people just b**ch about it and don't do anything to change . It's like watching the news (a bunch of f**ked up sh*t that no body will do anything about). All we can do is set the example but society has made it so we have to do all the f*ked up stuff just to live in this world. If were willing to die for what we believe and do what's neccessary we'd be labled terrorists so should we even care anymore? You tell me.I'm not sure I'm that strong yet.

You sound like you've been fed a bunch of crap. Global warming is a trend that happens every so many years. Did you know that in the 60s/70s they were worried about the global cooling trend that had been going on since the 40s?

Trees are necessary. And lumber companies who cut down trees grow more trees!!! It is all about supply and demand.

I don't care if they get rid of McDonald's because I don't eat that crap but what good will it do to get rid of McDonald's?

I think you need to educate yourself a little better on these topics instead of being a mindless alarmist.

You make obvious points that everyone is already aware of. If you are that concerned about these issues please use all that energy and anger to good use and join an organization that caters to your feelings. Getting angry at people for not behaving or doing the things that you feel are right for the environment will get more of these folks angry at you which is missing the point. Providing a more educated approach will get better results.
Why don't you start in your neighborhood and try to 'enlighten' these people.

1. You need to ask yourself if you are boosting your own sense of self-esteem by either assuming other people don't care or else by knowing some don't and knowing you get to feel superior.

2. Put your money where your mouth is and join some groups who do work in these areas.

3. You could try moving to rural parts of China, where you could grow your own food in the fields and cook it up for dinner.

4. You could realize that while many people are as concerned as you are about the Earth and the environment all they, as individuals, can really do is their best in their own little lives. Some don't have time or money to do more than that.

5. Are you aware that the woman/scientist who discovered the problem with the hole in the ozone layer and the cause of it got a bunch of people to listen to her, and that led to a bunch of countries getting together to stop using the stuff that was making the problem A couple of weeks ago on the news it was said that the hole in the ozone layer is closing up and should be all closed by, I believe, 2018. My point is that people are doing things, and doing things that do work. The people who can do something tend to be people who have good communications skills (a person needs to be able to speak and write well if they are to be listened to). They tend to have good skills when it comes to people (people have to be able to work with other people and get along with them if anything is to get done).

6. You come across like someone who is young and who has found the "Earth thing" an appealing cause to get all "passionate about". You come across as if there's something you get for yourself out of getting on here and sounding off in as good as way as you're able about the Earth. I'm not saying this is how you really are. It is, though, how you come across. You also come across as someone who is spitting out some else's rhetoric rather than presenting a reasoned, substantial, argument that might actually make someone pay a little attention to the cause you say you care about.

Forget about whether you like McDonalds or not or what everybody else says about it, and get a really solid understanding of the issues you care about so that you can speak and write in a convincing way and so that you can figure out ways that you can become active in getting things changed.

Also, don't flatter yourself into thinking that if everybody today doesn't come up with some immediate and complete solution to the concerns about the Earth that "its all over". There's a good chance that by the time the planet freezes 1) people will have figured out a way to either do something about it, prevent it, or deal with it and 2) some other phenomenon in Nature could have begun to occur to actually turn around a direction that appears clear today. People don't know everything - not even scientists. Chances are the planet won't freeze in your lifetime or the lifetime of even your grandchildren.

By all means, care. By all means make some effort to do something. By all means educate yourself and get a good solid understanding of the whole picture. Other than that, have a little faith in other people and in science and in God and lighten up a little. It may be nice for a person to have a "cause" to be "passionate" about, but usually a person has a very, very, natural and solid understanding of his cause/passion. You can't just borrow someone else's passion and try to take it on as your own because a lack of substance in that situation makes it so people won't listen to you.

So by following what you are saying....there would be no computers or internet to allow you to express your opinion to the masses.

Sounds like you are similar to people that want to tear down all the dams to "save" the salmon. Also want no nuclear power, and no coal plants (pollutes the air, etc). I guess this is fine if you don't mind having no electricity.

The goal should be to reduce the impact on the environment, not remove everything that does.

Your solution has been tested throughout history. See the Feudal Era, the Dark ages...etc. While factories have many negatives, there are other ways to reslove these problems than pushing everyone back into a purely agricultural society where one bad years crop can mean the death of millions of people.

Please think about this. Katrina came through and damaged much of Louisiana and a few other southern states. If this were to happen in a purely agricultural area there are many things that would have happened. First off, few people would have escaped as the only transportation available would be by horse. There also would have been little or no outside communication to call for national help. Those that DID manage to survive the original storm would now face additional problems. Their crops are destroyed, as are their homes. Building a new home and trying desperately to lay in new crops in time at the SAME time would be a nearly impossible task. Added to that all rubbish and storm debris would have to be manually removed by hand and horse power. Items too large would have to be broken up into smaller peices to be removed. Much of this damage repair would have to be done before the new crops can be laid. Meanwhile, the old crops are destroyed, as are most of the few reserves that remained from last year. So these people struggling to exist now have to do so on little or no food.

Without the technology produced by factories refridgeration is impossible, so foods can not be brought into the area before it rots. Due to the high numbers of deaths, many people would be unable to work on rebuilding or replanting as they would spend weeks simply burying the dead. As the dead would take so long to be removed, many would begin to putrify and disease would spread rampantly.

At the end of the year, assuming NO other major storms came through, only a handful would survive. Other people accross the planet would also be dying. Illnesses that currently require only a shot or a prescription would now become frequently fatal. The medication that could save your life is only available due to those factories you just closed.

Next consider the clothing you will wear. Will you return to slaughtering animals and skinning them so you can wear their skins to keep warm? Perhaps you will plant cotton or make reed clothes. Anything from a "natural fiber" means giving up viable land for food to the fiber producing plants. Next you need to learn to turn those into first string, then cloth, then clothing... all without the benefit of machines. I suppose you might say you will keep sheep for their wool. Well, without shearing equipment, you will need to hack away at that wool with scissors (until those wear out) and later with a knife. (This also means you will need to learn basic blacksmithing or stone knapping to MAKE your knife since we can't buy those at a store anymore... no one makes them, the factories are closed.) Then you have to prepare the wool. The traditional (nonfactory) way to do this involves several women pushing it back and forth with their feet as it clumps. At this time the wool is kept warm and very wet with an amonia fuid. Where are you going to get the fluid? pretty much the same way they did "way back when". You are going to make everyone in the house pee in buckets for weeks so you'll have the pee to pour on your wool while your bare feet card it. Next you can spin it into yarn and eventually weave it into cloth or knit it into yarn. Save some more pee though if you plan on dying it various colors.

Since soap factories no longer exist, you have to be prepared to make your own soap too unless you want to be one dirty and stinky person. This requires a large cauldron, animal fat, ashes and water. The soap that comes from this is rather caustic, but the artificial ingredients used today come from factories so you can't have that.

This is only a FRACTION of the things you have to consider here. There is a lot more to "close all factories" than you have considered. Such a move would mean that BILLIONS of people would die. Those that did survive would scrape by year after year on the brink of starvation. Childbirth would again become the leading cause of death in women and it would be common for any couple to have at least 3 dead children in their family graveyard. Since there is limited area for wild animals currently, the hunting in most areas would be extremely limitied, wiping out entire species. You can't tell someone they can't kill a "protected" animal if it means the difference between watching their children starve to death.

The only solution is not to drop all the advances we have made, but rather to make MORE advances. Create the technology that reduces or eliminates emissions. Technology that can cause machinery to run on "free" and energy efficient fuels.

If conservation is so important to you, get off YOUR *** and walk away from the computer. Go out into your neighborhood and start a recycling program or energy conservation program. Lobby the government for viable solutions to our problems. Convince your town to do what others have done and install a FREE bus system using energy efficient busses. If half the population ditches their car because they can get where they need to go for free, that's a huge difference! Go to school and learn as much as possible so that you can invent the solution.

Whining about how others dont change does nothing. Get up and DO something effective. People are more likely to switch to a new system when they see it working. We are not however going to toss all our modern conveniences like medical care, housing, transportation and food to make you happy, knowing that we will die in the proccess. If it means my child's life or your pissy attitude, you can stay pissed.
