If you have a Linksys, go to the Linksys web site. It was easy as pie. It sends you to a web site and it installs the settings onto your new network device.

First of all, you need to have a router to set up a LAN (Local Area Network).
Then,
1. your Internet modem line connects to the router
2. Network cable from router goes into a PC.

If you do not know how to use your router, please check the websites of the product.

1) does the laptop have wireless?
2) does the router have wireless?
3) or do you have an ethernet cable between them?

You need a router, for multiple machines... don't try piggy backing the connection using "tcp/ip sharing".
