Wrong conception date is a possibility.
The normal length of pregnancy is anywhere from 38 weeks to 42 weeks. The 40 weeks you always hear about is just an average.

The wrong conception date is probably the biggest reason. This is based on either the date of the woman's last menstrual period, or an estimation based on the size of the baby during an ultrasound. I was one of those women who could tell you to the second when I conceived, and still I went to 42 weeks and had to be induced.
There was no real "reason" for my going overdue and having a 10 pound kid. However, once he was born by c-section, my OB was careful to induce me at 39 weeks on my second and third babies. Had healthy nine-pounders doing VBACs that way!
By the way, I had a c-section because the kid got stuck, not because it was scheduled.

Overdue is such a medical minded thought. The AVERAGE pregnancy is 40 weeks. But first babies average 41 weeks. Because the docs calculate from the date of your last period, they don't really know the true conception date.
For example, if your period was the 15th, you might have ovulated on the 30th. But it may not have happened until the 9th of the next month depending on how regular your cycles are.
Plus, sperm can survive for 3 days. So, even if you think you know, it could be a little off.

Yep, that's usually the reason. When the baby is fully developed he or she will begin the process. I know that occasionally some people need help, but that's the exception, not the norm. Just relax and be glad that you're having a full term child and won't have to worry about all the complications your child could suffer as a premature baby.

Yes. This is one of the reasons having a scheduled C-section because the baby is "overdue" is a bad idea. If the baby is born too early, their lung development is potentially incomplete.
