Challenge yourself. Make sure that you stick to something for all four years of high school, whether that be on a sports team, in a club, volunteering locally, this shows commitment. Universities want to see that you are diverse as well. Go above and beyond, take more than just the 2 years necessary in a foreign language. As I am currently working on my Masters in the teaching profession, make sure you aren't trying overload yourself. YOu don't want to be burnt out before you even get there. You will also want to make sure that you have 2 teachers that know you very well to write good recommendations for you. Make sure to have you essays checked and re-checked by someone you know and trust, as the subjects may be very personal. If you work, and don't have time for other extra activities, make sure that you have your boss say something about you. Know what's going to be on the tests, SAT ACT. Don't go in there expecting to just get a good grade, actually study, and if need be get a tutor. Do things that intrests you, not just to fill up space on the application. When they select people they want ones who actually care about what they do, not just people who are trying to get in. They want you to succeed once you are there. Remember quality, not quantity.

Yes, the AP classes, definitely, and you also have to do well in those classes. Then, pad up your app with extracurriculars. But keep in mind, don't just join something so it can show up on the app; colleges know when you do that or do something you actually have a passion for. 2 to 4 activities that you're really devoted to is plenty. Then do really well on SATs and show you have good leadership skills.

Learn how to spell (not being mean just truthful). Talk about your life experiences and how they made you into who you are, and who you want to be. Also take AP classes and join lots of clubs and stuff. Try to be in student council also.

You can't find it. You have to do it. Get busy with extracurricular activities that highlight your strengths and interests, and keep working hard in the classroom to keep your grades up.

Good luck!
