I'm not sure if it's the same for porcelain, but it's called the hallmark and it related to the artisan in terms of gold, silver or platinum. It's a mark of purity.

usually that is a manufacture mark, or it could be the artist signature, depending on the age of the piece and whether its made by hand or machine.
