You have to go to a nursery and tell them what kind you like and they can tell you if it will live or not. Usually, your local nursery will carry things that will grow in your local weather. Look in the yellow pages for ones that carry trees, palm trees, etc. not just small plants. Try for a 'local' type of a nursery too..one that's been in business for a number of years. They will have more answers than the dorks at Home Depot or Osh or big places like that where you cant get real good, customer service.

Palm trees won't survive the winter outdoors that far north. The ones you saw were probably in pots. You say your yard will be landscaped, well the landscaper will recommend the proper plants for your growing zone.

Can't really answer without knowing what area you are in - most palms can't survive winters in colder areas. Here's a link to a good information site on them:

I have had Palm Trees. I know they are hard to kill. The ones we had grew ridiculously tall and had HUGE spiders and bats living in them. They were almost impossible to kill. You may want to do some research before you plant one and think very hard about where you place it.
