Typical distance between floors is 8'. According to code, the rise between each step must be between 7 and 7 3/4". (This may vary from place to place). When you divide the correct riser height into the typical distance between floors, the amount of steps is typically 13.

If we had 14 steps, it wouldn't meet the floor on the second level. Seriously, I don't know. Maybe an architect or a home builder will answer this question. If not, this will be another one of the mysteries of life. Good question.

Yeesh! Do you fall down a lot? I fell down stairs once or twice..wow, more times than that actually!
Do you have any bad luck? Maybe if you believe you have bad luck from the 13 stairs, you can put salt in tall vases (like bud vases for a single rose) in the windows around the house, espically near the stairs. Its supposed to confuse evil spirits, they have OCD or something like that-they have to count all the salt grains or something...My sister is a witch and she tells me all kinds of trippy things to do.
Good luck!

Yes, but if you are counting then it will always be 14 when you finally have both feet on the floor.

Wouldn't it be better to say 12? Or live in a bungalow?
