Polo wraps
]are bandage materials, usually made of fleece, for a horse's legs. They are quite stretchy compared to other bandaging materials, and are used for mainly for protection during ridden work, longeing, and turnout.

Advantages of Polos
Polos are suitable for everyday work, protecting against minor scrapes and bruises and helping to prevent irritation from sand or arena footing. They are also used when it would be best that the horse not wear boots (such as on horses with a sensitivity to neoprene, or if the horse has minor cuts on his leg that would be rubbed if a boot were worn). One advantage of polos over boots is that they conform perfectly to any leg, and may be used on multiple horses of different sizes. Polos are also used for shipping horses sometimes. Usually, you put a pillow underneath the polo, so that the horses leg is protected from any harm.

Disadvantages of Polos
Perhaps the most notable disadvantage of polo wraps is that they are made to use without padding underneath, so can be very dangerous if incorrectly applied, and could possibly cause damage to the tendons. Polos are also not suitable for cross-country riding or riding in wet conditions, as they absorb water and become very heavy and sag. Brushing and galloping boots offer better protection and are more likely to stay in place than polo wraps, and so are more likely seen if the horse is jumping or performing fast work. Exercise bandages are also a good alternative if the horse needs more protection.

the new issue of Horse Illustrated or Practical Horseman has an article on how to wrap polo wraps. Their purpose is to add support to the bones in the area from the knee to the ankle. Take a polo wrap and start just below the knee. Wrap around once to secure the end. The pressure applied by the wrap should be snug but not too tight. Start wrapping downwards leaving no gap. Wrap under the fetlock and come back up. you should see an X formed by the polo wrap in front just above the hoof. Then wrap back up the leg and you should end where you started. snap the velcro and voila. it takes time and practice. it is easier to use a set of splint boots but it is an asset ot be able to securely wrap a polo. The polo wraps can be used while riding to offer protection on the legs and support of the bones, while trailering to offer protection, over an injury to offer protection and to keep a bandage still. Polo wraps are long pieces of material that are about 4 inches wide.
