Exactly what the names imply. Secured networks are protected by a WEP code (which you can choose when you set it up) so only people that have the code can access the network. An unsecured network is open to any body within range of the signal. If I parked out in front of your house with my wireless laptop, it's possible that I would be able to access your network (i.e. your computer and files) if you were unsecured. Bottom line - secure it.

i keep my network secure with the MAC address (contrarely to what one may think, this is not a mac vs PC thing, any network card has a MAC address. I forgot what it stood for), so that no computer can access it without being in my list of MAC addresses. So even if the connection says unsecure, no one will be able to access the network except my computers, which means that it is technically secure. I think this is faster since it doesn't have to go through the encryption. Left to be confirmed.
