The local high school's team mascot is a Pirate. The image on the back of the letterman jackets is a Pirates head. The Pirate has a dagger or a knife clinched between his teeth. It's always looked like this. Somebody has complained about the dagger(knife) saying they dont want there child wearing a tee shirt with a picture of a weapon on it. So now there going to change it ! There going to remove the dagger from the pirates mouth.

Does anybody else think this is ridiculous?

I've seen that pirate image around town for as long as I can remember. My 22 year old letterman coat has it, my dads 45 year old letterman coat the same. The image never gave me violent or criminal thoughts. To me it was something out of fantasy land, as in not real! I find it hard to believe that some people can't or won't broaden there minds enough to seperate fantasy from reality. I dont agree with every opinion but I do respect and thank you for it.

I will give you two answers to this question--

First, I kinda see where this parent is going with the idea--that is, how do we teach our children to be non-violent persons when violent symbols are tolerated without question in society? So, in one way, I think it is a good question to ask.

But, if we remove the weapon from the pirate's mouth, then what is the next step? That would have to be the removal of violent programming on TV--crime shows, cartoons, westerns, space wars, etc. Then we'd have to get rid of detective and mystery novels that involve murder. The traditional parlour game "Clue" would have to go....And so on, and so on....

So, while I understand this parent's sentiments, perhaps the answer is that the problem of violence in the world won't be solved by removing the dagger in the pirate's mouth, but maybe there are other ways this community might devise that have a greater impact in teaching peace and nonviolent responses to children.

Yes. It is utterly preposterous. Pirates ALWAYS had knives in their teeth when they were boarding another ship to kill the crew and plunder it. It's just the way they worked. There's nothing wrong with portraying a character ACCURATELY, dammit! This is just another sally from the Politically Correct Storm Troopers. What a bunch of pu$$ies.

Makes me wonder: if the high school theatre was putting on a production of Richard III, would there be a sword fight allowed, like there was in the original? Or would the characters have to settle their differences in a more emotianally fulfilling way (like with Nerf noodles) because a sword fight might offend some people because "swords fights are too violent"?

It is called political correctness. I understand why they are doing it, do I agree with it, not really, but if that is what they want, so be it. It still will not change the team or the school you will still watch them play, right. Maybe instead of a dagger they could put a hot dog in its place. Just a thought.

Welcome to Hypocrisy Land, thy name is America. I bet the same parent who complained of the logo has purchased for their kid, a toy gun, a video game in which the object is to shoot someone or something, seen an action/adventure, drama, thriller or sci-fi flick where the body count was higher than zero. The hypocrisy to try to cleave a logo with a knife to something more sinister is just ridiculous when you have so many OTHER worse influences out there. Why do they not take their fight to the game makers? Because they can't. the game makers have billions and they can not bully or brow beat them. The school caves because they don't want to use reason for risk of looking like they support violence. Like seeing a barn burning and not wanting to hose it down to try and save it because you do not want to appear to be wasting water on the ground. Hypocrisy....just don't make sense.

It's completely ridiculous.

Let's see ... if we remove the dagger, then it's not a violent image any more, because this one could have been a nice, friendly, peace-loving pirate who would never hurt anybody? :)

See, you have to understand. You are growing up in the land of "Political Correctness". That means we are afraid of offending or threatening someone. It MAY scar them for life. That's another reason why the public schools are lowering grade standards, it is thought that if a child is failed, it will render him useless for the rest of his/her life. They MAY be scarred, feelings hurt. Geez, we wouldn't want that, right?

Maybe they will replace the dagger with a thumb, huh? Cool.

He will just look like a bum, then.
My high school had the 'Raiders' with a picture of an Indian.
My college had the 'Falcons'. Want to trade in your pirate on a bird?

I think it was ridiculous that they accepted that logo to begin with, I guess they are finally waking up. The Pirate to begin with is only a Criminal. Would be the same as wearing a Striped Prison suite.
