It helps you to understand other cultures and to be able to communicate with others.

It helps you to understand English sometimes. Many of the root words are similiar to English. Example: mascar means to chew... masticate is an English word meaing to chew. You will find similar roots like that in many words.

It can help you get a job because you are able to communicate with many more people.

Most colleges require it.

I'm in Spanish 4 and I never realized how much Spanish is really spoken. It's neat to watch a movie and hear someone say a phrase in Spanish because then I am instantly the smartest in the room since I'm most likely able to translate.

Mainly taking a language looks good to colleges (and is normally required for 2 - 3 years in high school), teaches you about culture, could get you a well-paying job as a translator, and allows you to speak another language and communicate with other Spanish-speakers.

Well, there are many reasons but in my opinion the most important one is that it broadens your horizons and helps combat provincialism. In learning another language you learn about other cultures and the differences and similiarities to your own culture. It helps connect you to the world as a whole and helps you remember your town, state, country etc. is not the center of the universe. It also makes you more understanding to people who speak English as a second language. I have heard many people ridicule someone from another country for mispronouncing an English word and I am almost sure that each of those people has never learned a second language themselves. If they had, they would admire the time and diligence it takes to be able to communicate in another language even on a very basic level.

example: When I was in high school my father tried to insist that I learn Spanish. I resisted. After graduation I moved to Miami (step 1) then Mexico (step 2) and got married to a Mexican. And I thought I would never need it. I was living in Nebraska at the time.

OOPS>

If that's not good enough, now I am living in Germany. 2 languages is a very good thing, not matter what they are.

The U.S. has a large Spanish speaking population. You will have an advantage over someone else in the workforce if you can Speak English and Spanish. Plus you can eavesdrop and know what they are saying instead of imagining what they are saying. Being bilingual is definitely a bonus!

Many jobs require a second language. Spanish is the fastest-growing language group in the U.S.

It opens your eyes to an entire new world. When you only know one language, you can only communicate with people of that language. The more languages you know, the more you can communicate, and the more cultures you can explore.
