Cricket, alas, has never been above politics. Long ago, Lord Hawke or some other toff had a disproportionate voice. Bodyline bowling in 1932-33 got the Australian government involved closely and the UK too I think. Close and Trueman both complained that they'd've had more England caps in the 1950s and 60s if England's game hadn't been ruled by Oxbridge men and/or southerners. Then came the anti-apartheid lefties telling cricketers whom they should and shouldn't play against -- along with the apartheid government telling D'Oliveira he couldn't play for S Africa and then not letting him play agianst them for England either. Both sides in that were more interested in politics than cricket. More recently there's been the Zimbabwe rumpuses with some in white-ruled countries arguing that playing there somehow props up President Muggerbe's cruel dictatorship. And the election of Bangladesh to full membership of the ICC parallels for politicks (spelling intended) the election of Nevada to Statehood in the USA. In Pakistan, the Govt has always had its hand in telling the cricket authorities what to do, the national domestic competition was for years named after one of their leaders wasn't it??
The good news is that cricket is sufficiently important for politicians to want to manipulate it. The bad news is that it is not so important, like football, that they are unable to.

No, cricket is like baseball. In fact, it is much more fun (in my opinion). It is truly an international sport. India, Pakistan, the West Indies, England, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, Hong Kong, and even the Unites States (though not as well known).
