I have a whole mess of jackstands in the garage that are closely new. I never use them because i feel more secure working on a vehicle jacked up with railroad ties. If its more than a days work, i like to leave them jacked up without the worry of someone knocking the vehicle over.

It's a personal matter. I usually leave the stands and put blocks of some sort under as well if I'm leaving it overnight.

Well they are kind of a necessary evil I guess. They can be a pain but compared to having a car fall on you I guess it,s the way to go.
