The state medical board will have an online database. You can verify that the physician in question has a current medical license, has board certification in the stated area of specialty practice, and you can usually see whether or not they have had an disciplinary actions against their license, and/or whether or not they have had any malpractice judgements against them.

I don't know what state you're in, but you could use a search engine and look for "XXX state medical board", and then from their website, you would look for something like "find my doctor", or "verification", which usually brings up a window where you can put in a name, or browse by specialty and location.

The AMA has a doctor finder function as well, but the information isn't as complete or up to date.
