Think about his first name. Sounds a lot like "America," doesn't it?

First one to "purposely" visit the New World. Columbus gets alot of undue credit because he thought he was in India. Vespucci traveled up and down the eastern coast exploring and sending back info to his native Spain. The Americas are obviously named after him.

Wasn't he the artist who took Columbus' rough drawings and turned them into a map. The story I learned in school was, after completing the map, he signed it, as artists tend to do. People mistook his signature for the name of the body of land on the map, and began calling it America.

You can't find any information about the guy who gave his name to America? Come on! You're on a computer. You're on line. Did you try putting that name into a search engine? Yahoo or Google? They'll give you more information than you can possibly use.
