I need to know what the going rate is for roofing a home. I live in Texas and I was told I have approximately "30 squares" on my roof. I am trying to make sure that I get an accurate price quote from these construction companies.

Roofer here. Based on the size you have provided there will be two costs.

1. If you are overlaying, roughly 2500-3000.
2. If your gonna remove the old roof, and put up a new one. Your looking at twice the cost.
3. If you have a leak, and new plywood, it could cost a little more.
4, Get at least 3 estimates. Make sure they have insurance, and refrences.

For the do it yourselfer. . .

A "Square" is 100 square feet, a quick way to check is to roughly calculate the size of your roof. Depending on the style of house you have it could be difficult due to gables and expansions. Take this number and calculate how many squares your roof actually is then calculate the price for just the shingles by comparing shingle prices. Make sure when to price out the style of shingle you would like and from the specific manufacturer.

If the number you are coming up with is reasonable when compared to the quotes then you know you are getting a good deal. If the number you came up with is more than the quotes be ware as some manufacturers make and sell seconds, these are shingles that did not pass the quality standards set by ASTM and monitored by UL. A contractor could use these to cut costs and your roof could fail within a few years.

First thing is a square is 100 square feet = 10'x10'. Measure the area of your roof. 30 squares = 3000 sq ft. Depending on the roof type the price will vary. How many layers are on the roof now, most areas allow 3 layers before a tear-off is required. This could add extra cost to a re-roof. Go to a store with your requirements and price the material you desire to show you are not a blind buyer. Have multiple bidders give you the price for the type and grade roof you want and compare. Ask for references view and talk to their customers about the work performed. I did my own tear-off and roofing.

not sure about the going rate in your end of the country, but the range should be between 60 and 100 $ per square.

The best way to get an idea on costs is to get as many quotes as you can. You'll get a better idea on what the job will cost and should be able to find a good contractor.
