In 1959, after Alaska and Hawaii became states, the geographic centerpoint of the nation shifted far to the north and west of Lebanon KS (the centerpoint of the 48 conterminous states). The geo-center is now located on private ranchland in a rural part of Butte County, SD. The county seat, Belle Fourche*, is the nearest town.
