Wrestling is staged in that a predetermined winner has already been decided. A lot of the attacks rely on tricking the audience's perception as well. For instance, as an example - when a wrestler delivers a stiff, loud kick, often the source of the loud contact noise is made by the wrestler slapping a hand against his plasticky-boot, or some variation of that theme. (Watch footage of Sean Waltman or Tajiri delivering kicks, if you need an example.)

With that said, wrestling isn't absolutely painless - even if a wrestler knows how to take a fall to minimize long term damage, some of the spots they go through are very painful. Furthermore, just as things periodically go wrong for a stuntman, a wrestler also will land the wrong way sometimes.

Wrestling is fake to the point that the outcomes are planned. Not all the hits are real and they put a mic under the ring to make it sound louder. But the talent is needed. Wrestling is hard and does required a degree of talent and skill. Just because the ending is predetermined doesn't make it completely fake.

It depends on how they mean "fake". It's fake in that it's not a real sport because the outcomes are scripted, etc. But it's not fake the same way an acrobatics show is not fake. These guys are actually leaping from 15 feet high and crashing through tables and stuff, and people should understand that to respect what the wrestlers do.

I saw live wrestling in New England in July (the Killer Kowalski teams). There were real people in the ring with real muscles. They were really not following tag team rules (4 were in the ring at a time). They were in real contact with each other and really fell down. All the rest was fake.

Every time that two of them bounced off each other each fell down even if they just grazed each other. Anyone who fell down landed on his back for maximum sound effects. Then they slammed their hand down on the floor after they landed for an even louder sound. During the match they taunted and stalked each other but out of the ring waiting for the next match they hung around like the best of pals. At the end even the worst of enemies worked together to pack up all the equipment. I was watching as they took the portable ring apart. It was made with a wooden floor designed for max sound, like a drum. Even if a little kid fell onto that floor it would have sounded like an earthquake. When a 300 pound guy jumped into a fall down position it was truly a great spectacle. They were a terrific entertainment but most of the fun was in the acting not the true wrestling.

It is fake and scripted. The wrestlers know what moves are gonna be done and are practiced before hand. Read the "Stone Cold Truth" about Stone Cold Steve Austin. Most of the wrestlers you think can't stand each other are actually best friends. Accidents do happen and the blood is either a pouch or there is a small razor on the wrestlers wrist that he uses to cut himself with.

Wrestling in the olympics and at the college level is not fake. Wrestling on WWF is fake. It's planned and rehearsed. Yes the people have to be in shape. Yes they do get hurt sometimes. And yes, it is fake.

Professional wrestling (WWE) is fake. Matches are planned and practiced before each show, and the story line is created well beforehand.
