Ok, if your going to do a lot of driving with huge automobiles, then you can do the "big gravel about 3 inches deep.
Then, after you have run that into the ground with the automobiles..(unless you rent a "roller", but, that would be expensive..I'm talking about a riding roller, to shove the gravel into the ground), so, you go a season with the big gravel.

Then, when its thoroughy burried, add some more big gravel and mix it with medium gravel.

You will have to go many seasons doing this, until you get a base that is at least 12 or more inches deep. Then, you get the "crush and run" and put down and you will have a fine driveway.
(The gravel that is "crush and run" is a tight locking type gravel and it makes a great surface, but, if you dont have a base already, it will dissapear into the ground and become useless, so, establish the solid base first).

I am assuming that you have a "long driveway" if you are going to put a gravel base down, instead of concreting it...

I wish you well..

If you want to stay with gravel, go with what is already there. Obviously, gravel tends to "migrate" so you'll need to replenish your driveway periodically. Consider replacing the gravel with concrete or asphalt.

The best gravel driveway will be only as good as the compaction and drainage of the soil underneath. Clay soil is sometimes difficult to compact due to the elasticity of it. To know the condition of the soil, and if it can be compacted, you can take a sample of the soil to a local testing lab. I have had to till in and then compact an additive soil with less clay to achieve compaction of 95% or more.
Make sure the soil is well compacted and their are no pockets to hold water. It needs to drain well.
Then install large rock as a base. 2" to 4" rock. Smaller rock called "road pack", or "CA6" is then installed and compacted.
Good luck.
