You'll find this at Wikipedia, or just search Google.

Anyway, John Locke was a philosopher best known for his empiricist perspective. The simplest explanation of empiricism is that nothing can be properly experienced that cannot be seen, heard, tasted, touched, or smelled. Human experience is defined by and restricted to the experiences we have with our five senses. Locke's philosophy differed from Renee Descartes' who believed in essence first, experience second, or existentialism. Classic philosophical dilemma: if a person was deprived of their senses and locked in a room for fifty years, would they experience anything? Or would they simply live in complete emptiness, devoid of any thought or emotion?

Best to read his opponent, Gottfried Leibnitz (1646--1716) the great German philosopher and scientist (created / discovered the calculus).

Locke wrote a series of essays, called "On Human Understanding", which purported to analyze all that which human knowledge was capable, based on empiricism. Leibnitz refuted this work, point by point, in a devasting piece entitled, "New Essays on Human Understanding".

Locke was very nearly the writer of the constitution for the Carolinas, before the American Revolution. Our own Declaration of Independence, states that "...We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator, with certain inalienable rights....that among these rights we include, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness..."
John Locke wanted to insert the words: "....Life, Liberty and Property....", that is, SLAVERY (as slaves were considered "property").
