In keeping with the institution of the Family in society and how we are raised in America, the courtroom has its rules for conduct so that anarchy doesn't reign and chaos ensue also. As children, we are taught to show deference to our parents in many ways: At the dinner table by waiting for Mom to sit down and take the first bite before everyone else starts eating for example.
In the courtroom, it may be said that Family Dynamics are mimicked on a larger scale, that of the district or larger community of citizens in our world whom are outside of our immediate family unit. We rise when the judge enters the room so that cases may be heard in an orderly fashion as well as to show deference to the judge who has sacrificed years in obtaining higher educational degrees to serve the community.

Court rooms are very ceremonial and full of rituals such as the oath, keeping order, and rising to show respect for the judge when they enter the room.
In many ways it is not unlike church where people are expected to behave in a certain way and there are times you stand or sit when told to as part of the ritual.

We rise to show him respect. Since he will be making the last decision on the cases. I will tell you if I was on trial I would not only rise but would kneel also. Thank God I as of yet not gone through that........but one never knows......
