The story was completely made up but it has elements from Bloody Mary folklore and the Bell Witch of Tennessee.
Bloody Mary is a type of long existing urban legend that children often talk about to scare each other. Bloody MAry is a type of ghost or witch (not the British Queen Mary I) that shows up if you call her or offend her.
Bell Witch is a legend that has been documented. In the early 19th century, the Bell Family of TN were plagued for a number of years by spirit that called itself Kate. The ghost mainly was annoying rather than deadly though she claimed to have poisoned John Bell.

It was a low budget movie made by an ametuer. That it became a hit was a kind of fluke. Tell me, have you ever heard of the writer/director since?

It is absolute fiction. They made the whole thing up as they went. There wasn't even a script. It is purely fake. Not to mention a stupid movie. "I am so scared" *yeah right*

It was just a movie, they discovered that most all of it was fake, a hoax...not based on true videotapes..

i don't know if its true or not but the actors are hidden from thepublic i know cause it says an interview with them on snopes.com
