According to my sources, the Mayans and Hindu-Arabic culture invented the idea of 0 independent of each other. This was an indication of great advancements in math because prior to those two cultures no one else had it. It's amazing because we don't really think of Mayans and Indians as great mathematicians. The Greeks would have been the first guess because they are so well known for their math developments, but they were actually quite primitive in their mathematics. The Babylonians were quite impressive as they worked in base 60, but unfortunately their mathematics was often confusing as they had no place holders. Since no one knows who came up with it first, both are credited with it's "discovery." 0 then became widespread through commerce.
