Have you purchased a 'Hanes Repair Manual' for it yet? That would be a great place to start. In addition to many useful pictures and diagrams they give step by step guidance for most repairs and maintenance issues.

Good luck with the explorer.

Always buy a repair book specific to your car from any auto parts store. Just $10. Especially useful for older cars. Or just go to library and check one out. Both Haynes and Chiltons do a good job.
