It's not dangerous, you can actually go to some drug stores and stores like Wal-Mart and find a one time use piercing gun with a piercing stud earring already in it and sterilized. The biggest thing is to be smart. Wash your hands thoroughly (30 seconds minimum) before touching your ears. Then clean your ears with cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol. Mark where you want the earrings and check to make sure they are straight and level. Then go to it. You would likely be better off having someone else use the gun since it isn't easy to see the side of your own head. Either way, if you don't get the special cleaner for newly pierced ears, then everyday when you shower, let the water run over them for awhile. Then, use an anti-bacterial soap and lather them well, turning them while 5-10 times washing, and while rinsing. Do not touch them constantly, or you'll likely get them infected.

Get it done professionally.
Why risk infection, improper placement and cross contamination?
You would be piercing with unsterilized tools at home.
You can not sterilize at home. Boiling, flaming or using bleach does not fully sterilize tools and jewelry.
You also would need starter jewelry that would allow for swelling and cleaning.
Why risk damage to your ear? Get done professionally.
••edit••
Just to let you know, lighting a safety pin with a flame does not sterilize it, it actually contaminates it more. Think about this:
•The safety pin is not a good metal, and can be weakened by the flame.
•The safety pin sometimes has a painted coating that can be weakened by the fire, this makes it easier to flake off inside of your body.(causing infection and worse)
•If you use a lighter the butane from the lighter will contaminate the safetypin, contaminating the pin more.
•If you use matches, the flame is still not clean.(sulphur)
•Although they seem sharp, household needles such as safteypins and sewing needles are not.Making your piercing not as quick, accurate and clean( the fistula should be clean).
This goes for saftey pins, sewing needles and any other needle basically. Hospitals don't flame their equipment.

well i have pierced my own ear b4 with a safety pin. i recommend u going to somewhere like the first person said, claires or some local place so they can do it w/ the gun, its faster AND probably better only so they will b able to line up both sides evenly. however if u ARE going to do it urself make sure u get a new safety pin and light it with a lighter to sterilize the pin. then just push it threw wherever u want it, and make sure u put in a CLEAN earring like gold. sometimes ppl are allergic to those cheap self made earrings that it will become infected or scab.
GOODLUCK!!! : )

ive had dum kids pierce their ears and other body parts in class with a safety pin. it works but the chances of it getting infected are very high. my cousins got their ears piecred at home and their mom just cleaned the needle with rubbing alcohol and poked it through. it hurts a lot more if you do it a home tho. u could also mess up.

dont peirce your ears by yourself. It is very dangerous and probably you will get ann infection. Go to Claires or something and they will give you earing to put in right away. Dont take them out because then it will get infected. Also if you do it yourself, it might be uneven, then you will freak.

go to the mall and buy self piercing earrings. They work gradually and in a few days you will have pierced ears or buy a kit with a piercing gun and do it yourself. I think you would be better off going to the mall and letting someone do it for you.

My friends and I did this when we were 12 and nothing bad happened, except my Mom freaked!!!
Use plain old ice. Hold two cubes on your earlobe, one in front one in back. Take a stick pin, like the one in your mom's sewing kit (boil it first in water to disinfect, and use rubbing alcohol). Take the ice away from your earlobe and then "screw" the pin through your earlobe (make sure it is in straight). Then "screw" a set of drugstore bought ear piercing studs in place. Use lots of rubbing alcohol for the next two weeks while turning the studs.
Waa Laa!!!
p.s. if you go to get them done by a professional use this trick I did with my daugther. Use EMLA cream on your lobes first (the freezing gel hospitals use on kids before needles), then get the gun piercing. It doesn't even phase you, you will feel absolutely nothing!!!
