Studies have been done that give evidence that listening to classical music--Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven--with its symmetrical phrases and form, can facilitate the learning process.
However, studies PROVE that students who learn to play an instrument during the elementary school years do better in school than their non-musical counterparts.
Music is kind of like learning a foreign language. The same has been shown for students learning a second language during the elementary years.
