I am 13 weeks pregnant tomorrow and my doctors are treating me for an infection that may be the blame for some dark brown spotting/discharge. This medication says not to be taken during the first 3 months of pregnancy does anyone know why? I'm scared to take it since I'm at the cutoff of 3 months. Any ideas why It is restricted to 3 months and later, should I be concerned? It's the weekend and after hours and can't reach my doctors

Metronidazole also known as "Flagyl" is not an antibiotic, but an anti-bacterial drug used to treat certain bacterial vaginal infections, and infections of the urinary tract of both men and women, and has been on the market for the past 40 years. It is available in oral tablets, vaginal and rectal suppositories and a topical skin cream. Its use during pregnancy are controversial due to early studies that have suggested that its use during the first trimester (1st 3 months) of pregnancy have caused birth defects in babies born to mothers who have used it. There are not any significant scientific studies on the use of this drug after the first trimester (later in pregnancy). Because of the connection between possible birth defects and the use of flagyl, physicians do not usually prescribe it during pregnancy unless they think it's absolutely necessary. Talk to your doctor and see if there is an alternative medication that you can safely take that will clear up your infection. As well, your partner should also be treated, because sometimes the organism lives within the male urinary tract system where it causes not symptoms, but can cause the infection to recur in you.

Call your pharmacist and let them know your concerns. If they can't help you they will call the drug company for you. You could also try a walk in clinic if you have any in your area. If you are still concerned you could always hold off on starting the medication until you can talk to your doctor.
Some times these drug companies put these warnings on just in case. To cover their own butts. It may have been a case were 1 woman took that medication 10 years ago and had some sort of reaction. And now the drug company just uses that warning to avoid a law suit.
Also just to point out that if you are 13 weeks then you are 3 months and 1 week.

your Dr wouldn't have prescribed u something that wasn't safe! When i was pregnant with my son i got an infection and was on meds that sd do not take if pregnant or breastfeeding. I called the Dr office and she told me the risk was greater to the baby of not getting rid of the infection than the small risk of the meds. Just call your Dr office I'm sure they have a service and the Dr will call you back. Just 4 your piece of mind!!!

I have a book called "The Women's Pharmacy" and it does say not to take it in the first trimester or while breastfeeding because it can pass to the breast milk. It does not give a reason for not taking it during the first trimester though.

Your doctor should have an answering service to call if there are any problems. Try calling his office to see if anyone answers. They can help you. If not, call the pharmacy where you got the medicine. They are very helpful in situations like this.
