My girlfriends sites ; myspace, xanga, facebook and others have all been deleted...it has happened before but nothing has happened for a few months..but again all her sites have disappeared..yet other people who use the computer have their sites unharmed..she changed her password from the last time..and thought that would prevent it from happening again..is there a course of action we can take to find out who did this..or at least prevent it from happening in the future?

No one is "hacking" you - the passwords are being found out. If you are sharing a computer it's 90% likely they they are being saved onto the machine.

If you use firefox just tell it never for this site when it asks you if you want this information saved. In internet explorer, you need to dig through the options and deactive saving form information.

That, or her passwords are just bloody obvious. A myspace hack, i.e. forcing their servers to delete a page / give information is very, very unlikely.

It's also worth scanning for keyloggers, with spybot search and destroy.

I love it when people say that there myspace etc. is being hacked. If a hacker (it wouldn't be a hacker, a script kiddie, yes (Hackers don't deface)) gained permission to a web site, why would they waste it defacing your one web site.

I agree with Phil M, there is probably a key logger on the computer. You said that multiple people use the computer.... that screams key logger. Also a Trojan horse virus, with a key logger. Hope I got my point across. By the way, Did you tell your girlfriend that you could fix her problems and realized that you can't. I was just curious, that's common for people to do. Mostly male.

P.S. I don't mean to attack you. I just thought that it was funny.

Either someone has a keylogger installed on that computer, or your gf is using a single very guess-able password for all of her sites.

She should use a different password for every site of at least 8 characters using both upper and lower case letters. Add in some punctuation marks and numbers too. Do not use passwords that are easily guessable such as "love" or her cat, dog or boyfriend (you) name.

Now do a complete scan for malware. Here is a procedure that is 100% free and very effective.
Do all 3 steps.

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender

http://www.bitdefender.com/site/home/

2. Scan for trojans and remove (free online scan) with Ewido

http://www.ewido.net/en/

3. Scan for ad/spyware and remove (free download) with Spybot Search & Destroy

Good luck.

That is sad, that Microsoft XP OS can delete so fast, and un-expectedly!

Usually that happens while you are composing, not after you have posted the work!

As to 'who' did this, did she have an angry ex-'friend'?

As to what you can do:
Fully reformat the computer hard drives, to remove the key logger that is forwarding all keystrokes to the remote idiot who is missing a village!

Re-install your OS. From the original CDroms!

A simple Restore will simply re-install the village idiot's keylogger!

I recommend you follow jibberjabars' advice. He knows his stuff about computer security. I learned everything from him and a very few other on another forum. Because of him and those others I have been infection for almost a year.

The only thing I would add to his post is to have your GF is using a weak password, have her go here and learn about doing Strong Passwords.

You can also Google "Strong Passwords" and get much information.
