I actually use the Johnson and Johnson tear-free baby shampoo on all my animals. It's very mild and, if it gets in their eyes it doesn't bother them so much.

I use a shampoo for ferrets called PPP Ferret Shampoo and PPP Ferret Cream Rinse..a conditioner. PPP also makes a ferret safe flea shampoo should you need it. Make sure you bathe your ferret(s) NO MORE THAN ONCE PER MONTH. Any more than that and you do damage to their hair and actually make the musky smell worse. I wash my guys once every 3 months. If you make sure to wash their bedding weekly and change any dirty litter daily you should see a difference. If you dont already own it buy the book..FERRETS FOR DUMMIES...IT IS THE BEST FERRET BOOK ON THE MARKET. It talks about everything! The best place I have found for ferret stuff is http://www.ferretstore.com/ ....you can get the shampoo there. If you dont want to use a ferret shampoo the only other acceptable shampoo is a shampoo that is safe for kittens. Most other shampoos have harsh chemicals in it. Ferrets have super sensitive skin and coats.

Try using Ferret Glow Shampoo for ferrets. You can find it at most pet stores. Human shampoos may dry out your ferrets skin or cause him irritation. Good luck, and have fun with your ferret!!

Ditto on "joniboni" and "Huh?" I think baby shampoo is ok, but I wouldn't use regular shampoo made for adults (these are a lot harsher than baby shampoos) or hand soap. If it's just dirt, then simply rinsing him in plain water will be enough and no soap should be needed. My ferrets actually get "dirt baths" from time to time, so a bath definitely isn't needed for a little dirt. Like "joniboni" mentioned, just brushing it off will be enough.

You can use people shampoo on your ferret, as long as he is not allergic- test a small spot before washing him completly.
Washing him twice a week can remove the neseccary oils form his coat, which then can become dry, flaky, and itchy. Try keeping washing to a minimum and use conditioner.
All Ferrets smell, it is just something you have to live with.

People shampoo is fine. Your better off using a good pet shampoo, but suave and other brands won't hurt the ferrett in any way. Just don't get it in his eyes. I know they have a musky smell, the best shampoo for that is made by marshell pet. They also have a great spray cologne for them too that works great. But don't worry about people shampoo. It's ok now and then or in a pinch.
