I was always told to start them the Sunday following the first day of my period. It makes it easier to remember when to start the next pack.

It will take the pills a couple months to really start working, so it's normal to still have all the crampy stuff at first. If it continues after about three or four months, you may want to talk to your doctor and they can put you on something that works better. This also covers birth control. If you've only been on it a month, you should use protection.
For starting your pills, in the long run it doesn't really matter, as long as you take them regularly. If you start at a different time from the booklet, your periods may be a little more irregular at first as your body adjusts itself.
Hope that answers your questions!
