I believe I'm developing a speech impediment. I keep stuttering and stumbling with words, and will occassionally mix up words. When i do so, prefer to mumble so i wouldn't get embarrassed, and would repeat myself with the correct phrase. I believe it started developing two years ago, when i was a freshmen. I went through a phase when i frist went to my new school. At first I didn't like my school and began isolating myself. I had friends, many friends, but they were really busy, so i would say home and since i had nothing else to do i would (ick) read or research. I also began building my writing vocabulary; that is, i would write with complex words but wouldn't speak them. Can someone please explain why and how speech impediments form, and how i can treat them, other than a speech therapist? I never had problems speaking before.

Just a thought. I am not an expert.

Instead of a speech impediment, maybe you have developed an generalized anxiety disorder in social situations and notice the stuttering and stumbling over words more than other symptoms. Emotional stresses in adults can cause this. --(new places, new friends, new school, moving, change of location...)-- Examine that aspect of your life, also.

If you are a natural person you should try cognitive behavioral therapy. It was the only thing that has helped me with my horrible health anxiety. Read here https://tr.im/Zo0pA

Your thinking determines your quality of life. Your thinking is what causes you these feelings:

Anxious, fearful, stressed or depressed
Constantly worried, or angry about something that is happening in your life
Struggling to overcome obsessive and negative thoughts.

If you change your thinking, you will change your life. This is the basic idea behind CBT for anxiety. The Cognitive part is where you learn nee methods and ways to change your same old habits and thinking patterns. If you keep thinking and expecting the worst – You will continue to suffer.

It sounds like maybe you have to much going on upstairs. Example: Try to open up several programs and run them on a computer that's a few years old and it cannot process all that information all at the same time so it "crashes". That is essentially what is happening to you I believe.
