Does a mare usually come into heat (season) again after she is pregnant? How soon can I tell if she is pregnant? She was exposed to my stallion about 3 weeks ago and is still with him but now she doesn't seem to be interested or be in heat any longer.

Probably stick your arm up her butt and feel for the embryo like in cows.

A pregnancy check can be done at 17 days by ultrasound. The normal gestation period for horses ranges between 11 and 12 months.

Mares should not come into heat after they are pregnant, which is a sign that they have lost their pregnancy.

If a mare has trouble keeping her pregnancy (due to hormones, like the heat cycle), give her Regimate.

Mares no longer come into heat if they are pregnant. If you were hand breeding you would check her for ovulation then ultrasound her 14 days later for pregnacy. Since she has been field bred, you can either wait for her to come back in heat after you take her from the stallion or get her ultrasounded.

Your local vet can ultra-sound your mare 15 days after her last breeding and tell you if your mare is pregnant. As a rule mares have a 21 day cycle so it sounds as though your mare may well have gotten PG. However, it is important to have her checked since the last thing you want is her to be PG with twins....they seldom servive and can put your mare at risk. good luck
