First thing to do is set a date to quit say 15th Sept

During the next week, remember every time you have a cigarette. What time, where you are, what it feels like, what you enjoy, what you hate.

On the 15th, quit.

Use nicotine replacement - patches are good, but there are others. Follow the recommended programme. It seems expensive, but you spent alot more on the fags.

From what you remembered during the previous week, try and avoid the times when you are most at risk. If you cant avoid them, like in the car on the way to work, find something else to do. (i would say eat some fruit or a carrot, but you might get stopped by the police these days)

Get a friend (preferably a non-smoking one) who you can talk to when you have real bad cravings, believe me, it helps.

It will be hard at first but it will get easier. With me, it got harder again after a few weeks but it will pass.

Put the money aside that you spent on smoking and buy yourself a treat. If you are a mid-heavy smoker, it will pay for a decent Tag watch in less than a year.

Good luck

I forgot to add, if a long lost friend comes back from overseas, avoid him like the plague, he is likely to have duty free that he is dishing out like there is no tomorrow. This tripped me up first time i quit.

One other thing, if you do smoke again, you are not a failure, these things are designed to make you want more. Just start quitting again and dont give up.

I really don't get it either. I've been through severe depression (It's something I'll always be effected with mentaly), and still never thought of a need to use drugs. Same thing with people who cut themselves. It's for attention..to be that person, so people can look at them and go.."Oh, they must be going through some pretty bad stuff!" Most people get started on it from peer pressure these days. Which, I too do not understand why people are stupid enough to give into that crap. It's not the addiction that's hard for me to understand, but why people bother with it in the first place. They say because it feels good, even though it's common fact that feel good doesn't last, and that good feeling means nothing because of how bad your life becomes. People take life too seriously. It's amazing how many people live their lives like they are in some kind of movie.

Will power is not a fixed factor and you can trick yourself into becoming a non-smoker.

The thing to do is first to stop for three minutes. Tell yourself that you will allow yourself to smoke if you feel like it after that.

When the three minutes are up challenge yourself to not smoke for another three minutes, and so on.

Drinking a glass of water is a good way to stall cravings too.

If you cannot stop for three minutes or stumble then don´t get too upset, just go and buy some cigarettes and enjoy them, and start again the next day.

Good luck!

I also have no willpower my friend. Use Nicotine Replacement Therapy. Go to Boots the Chemist.....say you want an inhalator with (48)cartridges. About the price of 4 packs of cigs. They smoke like a real cig...but it's only nicotine in them....totally harmless my Dr assures me. It takes away ALL the need for a cigand lets your body return to normal with NO withdrawl symptoms. I have been off them since New Year's Eve and I am now a Smoking Cessation Adviser...trained by the NHS. You have won 50% of the battle already by really WANTING to quit. I so wish you all the success in the world. Give up. Then start living again. You DEFINITELY will succeed.

Don't use "no will power" as an excuse or a crutch.... I quit several times over several years, the longest was for 6 months....then one day I just quit, I smoked my last cig, went home and showered, and never bought another pack...that was 5 years ago.

I think I just really had to wait for the time to be right for me, I really had to "want " to quit. geting married to a non smoker helped.....my wife having a baby helped more...not being around people who smoked helped even more. staying away from clubs and bars, helped alot too.

It isn't just giving up the cigs, it's changing habits...for me it was get in the car, cup of coffee and a smoke...break time smoke...eat lunch, smoke again..I had to break the other habits as well..when I would pause to think, I would light up..like it helped me think?

best wishes...if you try and fail...try again, you have nothing to lose.

I did try a cig again after being off of them for more than 3 years.."just to see" just one time how my body would react after being smoke free for so long.....man it was like I never laid them down, I could have picked up a pack and started all over again, but I didn't...you can do it, you just really REALLY have to want to

Find some will power. smoking is one of the stupidest things you can do. You are paying money to ruin your body, shorten you life and make you health worse as you get older. My mum wanted to give up and told my wife. My wife said you smoke to many and you wont be able to give up. My mum never smoked another cigarette from that moment on.
( she was hell to be with for the next 6 months)

Good for you.

There are many ways to do it, all work for some people and not for others.

I would reccommend hypnotherapy (how i quit). I bought 3 sessions for £175 (not cheap i know) but it really worked... 4yrs later and I am still off them

Accupunture is great too if you get pangs- it kills them dead!

Good luck. It is not an easy road, but one well worth taking.

Ideas:
1) Imagination will beat willpower every time. Do some imagining!
2) Run
3) Use gum and / or a patch.
