Even if the child is by his or her self, they should certainly be able to ride the city bus. And, unless the area is particularily dangerous, they should be able to walk on the street during the daylight hours.
They should certainly be drilled in the basics, however. Don't talk to strangers, don't go with anyone, no matter what they say.
Many parents these days give children a password. If you send a message with someone, you give them the password so the child knows that the message is from you.
But a preteen or teenager should certainly be safe enough on city streets if they are going direclty from school to home.

Its never good to be over protective of a child. However, soemtimes, it is necessary to do something different. In the conditions you're describing, I think it's absolutely fine. My sister and I walked all the way to and from school, about a mile.

I think it's o.k. My son does it sometimes. We live about 2 miles from his school. If if was a bad neighborhood, I might think twice, but kids need to have a little freedom. Plus, it's good exercise to walk once in a while.

Sure. I used to walk to and from elementary school. About a mile. It was more of a suburb, but still, I don't think that would be unusual, especially for a middle schooler.

Sure, I'd think it was fine. I walk to and from school since it's really close, and the only thing scary I've had happen to me was seeing a rat carcass on the ground, half eaten.

i might look ahead to our order to return and then seize the two plates and walk out the door leaving him there with no longer something. i might look at living house the subsequent morning and ask what he's cooking me for breakfast.
